Art Therapy approaches in Psychosocial Occupational Therapy practice

OMY0100.jpg

The arts have long been used within Occupational Therapy practice, however our approach to implementing therapeutic art approaches has evolved from arts and crafts activities, to allowing expressive art approaches to enrich the psychosocial therapy process. Expressive Art techniques that are integrated into occupational therapy practice allow for an added layer of understanding and growth within OT information gathering and intervention sessions.

Occupational Therapy has and is progressing to adapt to deviations from the medical model, as creative approaches to Occupational Therapy practice continue to prove beneficial to bridging gaps in communication, self exploration and skill building.

This training is designed for occupational therapists who are:

  • inexperienced in using expressive arts techniques in their therapy practice, and

  • want to develop the knowledge and skills needed to use expressive arts to supplement their Occupational Therapy approach

Following the completion of this training, participants will be able to

  • understand the difference between visual / fine arts and expressive arts therapy approaches

  • gain an in depth view of the history of art within Occupational Therapy practice, the benefits of art therapy, including the evidence base relating to this.

  • name at least three therapeutic benefits of expressive art for clients.

  • identify five forms of expressive art that can be used in an OT intervention session.

  • explain how using expressive art techniques might enhance their OT practice.
