Art Therapy
At Our Mindful Youth, our Occupational Therapist Tessa has completed her post graduate studies in a Diploma of Art Therapy, and provides Occupational Therapy services informed by Art Therapy principles.
Art Therapy refers to any combination of visual arts, writing, drama, music or dance as a creative and therapeutic outlet. Art Therapy sessions involve choosing an appropriate art modality and using this modality to lower anxiety and stress, improve self-awareness and self-esteem, strengthen relationships, regulate behaviours and increase social skills.
Using art as a tool for expression, communication and self exploration could be the most important tool missing from your mental health tool kit. Creative expression is a great way to:
-
Navigate feelings of anxiety and unhappiness.
-
Take a step back from life and reflect on creations from a distance.
-
View thoughts, feelings and sensations from a point of curiosity rather than judgement.
-
Calm the nervous system.
-
Communicate without words.
-
Create something to be proud of.
